This project was prepared as part of a BioQUEST faculty development workshop entitled BioQUEST Summer Workshop 2006: Exploring Complex Data Sets at Beloit College in June 2006. The BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium is committed to the reform of undergraduate biology instruction through an emphasis on engaging students in realistic scientific practices. This approach is sometimes characterized as an inquiry driven approach and is captured in BioQUEST's three P's (problem-posing, problem-solving, and peer-persuasion). As part of this workshop groups of faculty were encouraged to initiate innovative curricular projects. Brief Overview:

TWO ESTEEM-STYLE MODELS. ONE LOOKS AT TWO SPECIES THAT CAN BE MUTUALISTS, COMPETITORS, OR PREDATOR AND PREY. THE OTHER LOOKS AT THREE SPECIES THAT CAN INTERACT IN VARIOUS WAYS:CURRENTLY THERE ARE TWO CHOICES: A MODEL OF THREE COMPETITORS, OR A MODEL OF ONE PREDATOR CHOOSING BETWEEN TWO PREY. TO INCORPORATE THE COMPUTER MODELS INTO A WET-LAB, STUDENTS ARE DIVIDED INTO SIX GROUPS, EACH GROUP SETS UP SIX VIALS CONTAINING DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS OF CHLORELLA, OSCILLATORIUM AND DAPHNIA, THREE GROUPS ADD NITROGEN TO CULTURES. PREDICT WHICH VIAL WILL HAVE THE GREATEST POPULATION GROWTH FOR EACH SPECIES. OBSERVE POPULATIONS AFTER A WEEK. EXAMINE COMPETITION AND PREDATION USING ESTEEM-STYLE MODEL TO SEE IF DAPHNIA ACTS AS A KEYSTONE SPECIES IN THIS SITUATION. THE MODELS CAN BE ADAPTED TO OTHER ECOLOGICAL SITUATIONS AND PROTOCOLS.
