Abstract/Description:
Presentation abstract: "BEDROCK: Bioinformatics Education Dissemination: Reaching Out, Connecting, and Knitting-together" is a three-year national dissemination project of the U.S. National Science Foundation's Division of Undergraduate Education. BEDROCK is a project of the 18-year old BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium that has promoted student learning based on a philosophy of: problem posing, problem solving, and peer persuasion. In tackling bioinformatics, we have tried to maintain our commitment to rigorous quantitative problem solving in a collaborative learning context. Our primary focus is easily understood through the title of our forthcoming book of activities: "Evolutionary Bioinformatics: Making Meaning of Molecular Messages." We believe in putting powerful tools in the hands of students who can then use them to address significant, real problems. We offer workshops, problem spaces, and tools to help educators engage students in actual research in bioinformatics or learn long-term strategies of research on issues of contemporary concern such as HIV infection, the spread of West Nile Virus, cell signals in cancer, protecting biodiversity, analyzing species invasions, drug design, and environmental remediation. We maintain a website with numerous resources http://www.bioquest.org/bedrock that grows with each workshop we offer as participants develop curricula for their own students or collaborate with our staff in curriculum development. We have presented four workshops in Thailand and individual workshops in other countries as well as hosting many international participants in our U.S. workshops. We seek to develop new collaborations with IUBS members and welcome feedback on materials that we have already developed based on use in classrooms and laboratories.
