Welcome to the Newark Prairie
Beloit, Wisconsin U.S.

During the summer 1995 BioQUEST Workshop, plans were made to photograph a section of the Newark Prairie for the Transect Web Site, a visual learning resource produced by another collaborative group effort at the workshop. A transect through a Prairie Dock community in this wet Wisconsin prairie undergoing invasion by willow, dogwood, and crown vetch was taken on September 8th in one meter sections for 20 meters north of the Newark Road. Prairie species found in this transect include Prairie Dock, Thimbleweed, Gray-headed Coneflower, Brown-eyed Susan, Big Bluestem, Cord Grass, Spiderwort, and Prairie Rose. Other common roadside meadow species include wild grape, ragweed, bindweed, thistle, goldenrod, wild strawberry, wild lettuce, and yarrow.

Plans to obtain spring images are being made with the cooperation of Beloit College. Vertical transects may be a useful addition in order to provide detail for those wishing to more closely examine the prairie visually using this web site.
